The 2011 growing season was lighter and later than normal. The wet winter and spring delayed bloom and hindered fruit set. These weather conditions pushed harvest back a couple of weeks. With the cool weather conditions, we were able to let the fruit hang longer to develop intense flavors and richer color.

Settled in 1849, the town of Jessup was named after Judge William Jessup. It was presented to the Luzerne County Court for incorporation as the Borough of Winton in December 1876. Two years later, Lackawanna County was incorporated. The early 1890s were very significant for the little town, as numerous new mining operations were opened. Shortly after these were opened, immigrants from Europe were lured to the area by the work available in the booming anthracite coal fields. It was mostly Italian immigrants that came to Jessup in search of jobs in the coal mines, among others. They arrived via Ellis Island, New York in the late 1800s. The Italians who settled in Jessup, and the immediate surrounding communities, came mostly from small towns in the Region of Umbria, Province of Perugia. Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino, Scheggia, and Sassoferrato, for example, sent many hard working individuals to the Lackawanna Valley for economic opportunity. It was from Gubbio, Italy that the immigrants brought the annual festival known as Saint Ubaldo Day. This festival is still held to this day in only Jessup and Gubbio. Jessup also has a annually wine tasting compition, held in mid May, local home wine makers meet every year to let the public sample the homemade wine. The 2013 PURE RED is a complex blend, that uses six different grape varietals as well has three of our vineyard partners that are committed to grow organically. The earliest harvested grapes were Areté Cabernet 10/2 0/13 and the last was the Pleasant Syrah on 11/13/13. Yeast 797 was used on all of the lots, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tank with an addition of some ½ ton French Oak.
This beautiful 2011 wine is the perfect ambassador for Yakima Valley Rieslings and re-affirms their sterling reputation. The nose is so delightful you could almost linger on it without tasting. Almost. The first impression is a blast of pineapple followed by a lovely peach. On the palate, the same burst of pineapple evolves into hints of lychee and mango. The residual sugars are nicely balanced with crisp acidity providing a wonderful Riesling experience.
The 2011 vintage was one of the coolest years on record. Most grape varieties were harvested up to a month later than normal. The cool season and late harvest gave us wines with ample acidity, restrained tannins, and true varietal characteristics. In the vineyard, we reduced crop levels and leaf-thinned to open up the canopies as a means to improve uniformity of ripening. In the winery, we saw more elegant wines with tame tannins. At the winery, the handpicked fruit was destemmed and placed into small fermentors where they were punched down two to three times per day during fermentation to gently extract color and tannin. Once the optimal level of tannin was extracted, the wine was drained and the skins were gently pressed. The wine was then racked to barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation and 26 months of aging in French and American oak.

Michael Taggares founded Tagaris Winery in 1987. The winery honors the proper Greek spelling of the family name whose members descended from the royal family and first began growing wine grapes in the 15th century. Tagaris winery is the modern day result of three generations of grape growers in Washington's Columbia Valley, where the climate and soil reminded Michael's grandfather of his Greek homeland.
