The 2012 vintage in the Santa Maria Valley was picture perfect with no significant weather episodes, creating a long growing season with record hang time producing complex and intense fruit. The Sierra Madre Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley is owned by Doug and Jan Circle. It sits at 215 ft. above sea level and consists of 155 acres, 91 of Chardonnay and 64 of Pinot Noir. It is the most northern and one of the western-most vine-yards in the Santa Maria Valley, only 15 miles from the coast, and benefits greatly from its unique marine influence. It is also one of the few valleys in the state that run East/West as opposed to North/South. An exceptionally cool growing season encourages slow ripening over a long period of time, allow-ing for the development of structure and flavor intensity.

2012 Kyra Pinot Gris Columbia Valley 750 mL

In 1999 Bruce and Kyra Baerlocher purchased an apple orchard in Central Washington on the Wahluke Slope and converted half of it to wine grapes. Kyra, with a B.S. degree in Bacteriology from the University of Idaho, started making wine in small private lots. Our first commercial release of 600 cases in 2006 included a 2004 Pinot Noir and a 2005 Pinot Gris. Our vineyards have expanded, Pheasant Vineyard now includes 75 acres, and Purple Sage Vineyard encompasses 100 acres. Although our vineyards are on the Wahluke Slope, our home has been in Moses Lake, Washington for over 20 years and this is where we began our winery operation. We moved to a larger location in 2007, a 5200 square foot building that is part of the Port of Moses Lake and were able to include a tasting room in the operation. Today we produce about 2000 cases per year with wines from our own vineyards as well as those we contract from others. Our best-selling wines include our award-winning Chenin Blanc and our Washington State Pinot Noir. Certified Organic Vineyard (Lodi Green is a unique designation that also takes care of vineyard workers). This vineyard is 19ft below sea level on limestone soils in the Sacramento Delta. This unique microclimate produces evening breezes and early morning fog cooling the grapes after long warm sunny days. This site is often ten to fifteen degrees cooler than much of the Lodi AVA; the perfect combination for building complexity and tastiness. Hand harvested and naturally fermented with indigenous yeast and wild yeast isolated from the Rhone Valley in ½ ton open top fermenters. We implemented a long cool ferment punching down the must by hand four times daily. Gently basket pressed into neutral French oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration.

This wine is from Italy, Trentino-alto Adige region, Alto Adige sub-region. Alois Lageder’s great grandfather founded the winery over 150 years ago in Alto Adige, Northeast Italy. In 1934, the family acquired the Lowengang estate in Magre and continued adding other prime Alto Adige vineyards. Now in its fifth generation, the company is led by Alois Lageder. His brother-in-law Luis von Dellemann, is the winemaker. Today Lageder owns 185 acres across a variety of microclimates. In the higher elevation Alpine climate, Riesling, Muller-Thurgau and Gewurztraminer grow well. Farther downhill, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco find enough warmth. In the valley floor, where temperatures exceed 90 F. in the summer, reds thrive. There are a variety of soils - mostly a mix of limestone and clay, with some volcanic porphyry. Lageder divides production into two brands - Alois Lageder and Tenutae Lageder. The wines of the Alois Lageder are made partly from grapes grown in their certified biodynamically farmed estate vineyards and partly from grapes purchased through long-term relationships with respected sustainable growers. Bud break started more than two weeks early at the beginning of April. Then the weather cooled down significantly, and we were two weeks behind typical growing patterns by mid-June. Due to the poor weather during bloom, our berry counts per cluster were reduced significantly, which meant a very small crop. Whereas we usually target anywhere from 2.5 to 3 tons per acre, we ended up anywhere from 1.25 to 2 tons per acre. This was somehow a blessing. Despite the cool summer (only two days above 100 degrees), we were able to ripen each block perfectly. Wines from the 2010 vintage show vibrant flavors, bright acidity and exceptional balance.
