An AOC wine made from extra ripe Moschato grapes. At harvest, the grape juice has a minimum sugar level of 221gr/lt. To balance the sweetness, the must is enriched before the onset of fermentation. The wine is matured in stainless steel temperature controlled tanks. A small quantity of wine receives oak barrel aging as well. The wine is golden in color with a harmonious bouquet of honey, apricot and honeysuckle. On the palate, it is soft, sweet and supple with medium body and moderate acidity. The finish is medium to long. Since antiquity, connoisseurs have enjoyed the wines of Samos. Samos is an island located in the eastern portion of the country in the Aegean Sea. It is mountainous with fertile soils that grow a variety of commodities. The Samos Cooperative, established in 1934, is one of the oldest cooperatives in Greece. 2008 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

If the name and locale for this domaine seem oddly familiar, it's for good reason. Domaine Eden was purchased by K&L favorite Mount Eden back in 2007, though the estate was founded in 1983 by Tom Mudd, who modeled it after the famous estate. A Cab-dominated Bordeaux blend, the 2008 Domaine Eden Estate Cabernet is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec from the cool Santa Cruz Mountains. Aged for twenty-four months in equal parts French and American oak, 50% new, the 2008 is characterized by classic Santa Cruz Mountains briary and currant fruit, mint, spice and oak, with chalky mineral highlights and tangy black cherry notes, a mark of this particularly cool vintage. Supple tannins and juicy acidity help make this more approachable young than Mount Eden's Estate Cab, but even this has the structure to withstand 10-15 years in the cellar.

2012 Annefield Vineyards Cabernet Franc 750 mL

We welcomed 2012 because of the return (more or less) of some welcome degree of normalcy after a hot and dry 2010 and the rain soaked September of 2011. An extremely mild and dry winter gave us bud break three to four weeks earlier than average. A dry and warm April and May resulted in flowering two to three weeks early, but occurred under favorable conditions. Mid-summer was hot and precipitation was variable, though the vines escaped water stress. Ultimately grape berry clusters were healthy, but the berries were larger than usual. Harvest began about 10 days early under typical August and September conditions, with one day of rain followed by a week of sunshine. The weather became dry but cool in October, phenolic ripening had ceased and any grapes left on the vines experienced sugar increases due to dehydration. Vintage 2012 resulted in classic terroir driven, gastronomical wines that are ripe with low alcohols.

2001 Renaissance Vineyard Claret Prestige Red Blend 750 mL

This highly individual wine, the current release of the Renaissance Claret Prestige, bears as much resemblance to traditional "claret," as the British call the red wine of Bordeaux, as Madonna does to the Madonna. The portions of sangiovese and syrah are certainly unusual, and what the hell are the six percent "miscellaneous" grapes? Tempranillo? Zinfandel? Charbono? In any case, this is a gorgeous wine that sports a perfect "wine" color, not purple, not ruby, but somewhere in between; the bouquet teems with lovely, ripe and fleshy black currant and black cherry scents freighted with cloves and sandalwood, lavender, violets and licorice with a slightly roasted aspect. It's smooth and mellow in the mouth, with current and plum flavors pierced by vibrant acid and a serious mineral quality. A few minutes in the glass pull up touches of cedar and wheatmeal, underbrush and dried porcini, earth and moss, all leading to a dry, spicy, minerally finish. Though filled with character, this wine is not dramatic or plush or overdone. It is already throwing sediment. Production is 200 cases, a large amount for a wine from Renaissance. Drink now through 2015 or '18. Excellent.
