2006 was one of the best vintages in the last decade and the wines from Hedges Family Estate reflect this with some of the best wines made to date. Mostly even temperatures and little wind and rain during bloom made for nice set. The summer was hot, but not too hot, and typical fall ripening conditions of warm days (80-85 degrees Fahrenheit) and cool nights (45-50 degrees Fahrenheit) began in mid-September and continued through October. Our philosophy of picking at optimum flavor maturity made us pick warmer site fruit as early as the third week of September and cooler site fruit the last week of October.
Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the southern most vineyard in the Paso Robles AVA, nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain Range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The mountains tower over the property's western flank, testaments to the tectonic forces that blessed Margarita Vineyard with a rare diversity of soils. The peaks also act as a gateway between the cool marine air to the south and warm inland conditions to the north. This phenomenon creates one of the coolest growing environments in the region, resulting in uncommon depth and structure.
The dark purple colour with violet reflections retains all its intensity. The nose is dominated by an intense bouquet of cherries and plums followed by scents of chocolate, smoke and vanilla. Generous in the mouth, with good balanced and lively tannins contributing to a velvety structure. Long and fruity aftertaste, with a light touch of oak. It needs further ageing to reveal its full potential. The perfect ripening of the grapes and the carefully selected date of harvest, which is practicated during the night, contribute to the preservation of varietal aromatic and phenolic potential. Right determing of the durations of pre- and post-fermentation macerations, allows extracting this potential, before its transfer by gravity to oak barrels. There, following malolactic fermentation, it is left to age for 12 months with further 8-10 months in the bottle. One of the latest harvests in recent times, cool moderate temperatures persisted throughout the growing season. However the resulting wines are of good concentration and balance, lower total acidity and pH lending to softer wines with more favorable ageability. Paying It Forward: As a family we find ourselves blessed with good health. Our good fortune, however, comes with a realization that others are less fortunate. As a result we have chosen to donate 15% of Purple Star Wines' proceeds to Seattle Children's Hospital to benefit uncompensated care-a gesture we hope will lighten the financial burden of families overwhelmed by the expenses associated with critical medical care. It's our way of "paying it forward."
2013 was another excellent vintage in Washington State, made slightly unusual by 80 plus temperatures in April and 90 plus temperatures in May. This uncommon early season heat caused bud break and growth to be early and rapid, exceeding average by about ten days. An average summer meant veraison and harvest began early, which led to ripe fruit throughout the state. Once again, "average" in Washington is everyone else's "great". Production: Grapes come from the Columbia Valley vineyards Weinbau, Wooded Island, and Sagemoor (all part of Sagemoor Farms), and Goose Ridge and the Red Mountain Vineyards of Hedges and Rockwell Brown. Most of the wines were pumped over during alcoholic fermentation for 6 to 10 days while on American Oak. About 50% of the wine was racked to barrel where it completed malo-lactic fermentation and then aged for an additional 9 to 10 months. The other 50% completed M-L in tank, at the end of which it was racked onto French Oak and had SO2 added. About 60% French oak /40% American oak.

For 2011, a couple of things stand out from the vintage and how they will affect Hamilton Cellar wines. First of all, the harsh winter temperatures from the winter of 2011 caused the loss of fruit from the vintage over all. Total state tonnage dropped to 142,000 tons which was down from 160,000 tons in 2010. So, a significantly lower total number of tons harvested from the vintage. The second significant thing to note from this vintage is the 2011 was the coolest vintage on record with heat accumulation totals at 2312 GDD (Growing Degree Days). A normal year is around 2628 GDD.
An Amontillado style Sherry from biodynamically grown Palomino grapes. The Palomino Fino has profound hazelnut-like aroma, that is smooth and light bodied on the palate. Aged and blended using the Solera method. The Demeter certified biodynamic Palomino grapes are grown by Gena Nonini of Marian Farms. Pairs well with soups, salads, hors d'oeuvres such as almonds and olives, and dry cheeses. Andrew and Laurel Quady left crowded southern California and their jobs in pyrotechnics and merchandising to pursue their dream a non-urban way of life making wine. Returning to school, Andrew graduated with a Masters in Food Science-Enology from UC Davis and Laurel became a licensed CPA. The juice was fermented with Eparnay II yeast in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks until the proper level of residual sugar remained. Fermentation was ceased by chilling down the tanks. The wine was cold stabilized, then filtered and sterile filtered into bottles. A natural cork was used as a closure for this wine.

Achaval Ferrer is located in the foothills of the Andes in the province of Mendoza, Argentina. The region's desert climate and soil conditions are ideal for the development of Malbec and other red varieties. Low yields, significant thermal gradients warm days, cool nights, poor alluvial soils, low rainfall, high altitude and the pure Andes irrigation water, all work together to mature grapes that can be transformed into complex, deep and structured wines made by famed winemaker Roberto Cipresso.
I under-estimated this Dow when it was first released. It has a deeper in colour than the Fonseca, the Dow 2000 has a lifted nose with fruitcake, damson, black plum, a touch of nail varnish and apricots. The more that you inhale its perfume the more complex it seems. The palate is full-bodied, quite spicy on the entry but very austere in the middle. Firm tannins, robust, a touch of dryness towards the earthy finish. Nice persistency on the finish, those peppery motes flittering about the mouth.
